Why I Dumped NRM For SDP -Ex-Guber Candidate, Solomon

By Nsan Ndoma-Neji, Calabar

The governorship candidate of the National Rescue Movement, NRM, in Cross River State in the 2023 general election, Mr. Patrick Solomon has defected from his old party and joined the Social Democratic Party, SDP, giving insight into why he dumped his old party for the SDP.

He made the announcement of his defection at a ceremony that took place at the SDP secretariat along IBB Way, Calabar yesterday.

Solomon stated that his decision to join the SDP was driven by conviction rather than personal ambition.

The defection, announced before party leaders, supporters and citizens, is described by Solomon as a “principled step toward advancing inclusive governance, accountability, and people‑centred development” in the state.

He said, “Cross Riverians deserve a political platform that genuinely reflects our shared values of social justice, inclusive governance, and sustainable development.”

He averred that the SDP’s social‑democratic ideology aligns with his long‑standing commitment to equity and public accountability.

He explained that the party offers a framework for tackling the state’s socio‑economic challenges through transparent governance, equitable opportunities and responsive leadership.

Solomon stressed the need for stronger institutions, prioritising human‑capital development and deepening citizen participation to build long‑term prosperity.

Reflecting on past governance experiences, he highlighted the importance of policy implementation that balances standards with social impact, citing education reforms that combine regulatory oversight with transitional support for schools and families.

He also called for stronger systems in local‑government administration, particularly in recruitment and human‑resource management, urging transparent, merit‑based processes backed by institutional safeguards to restore public confidence.

On federal engagement, Solomon underscored the importance of strategic positioning and effective representation to advance Cross River’s interests nationally, noting that “constructive collaboration, competence, and policy clarity are key to strengthening the state’s voice within the federal structure.”

Reaffirming his motivation, Solomon declared, “This is an affirmation of my values and my belief in politics as a tool for positive change.”

He urged youths, women, professionals and working families to remain actively engaged in the political process.

He emphasized that meaningful development requires collective participation and shared responsibility.

The defection was welcomed by SDP leadership.

Cross River State SDP chairman Apostle Stella Archibong, said, “This is a testament to the growing confidence in the SDP as a platform for purposeful leadership.

“Together, we are committed to moving the party and the state forward.”

Party members from the three senatorial districts expressed optimism that Solomon’s arrival would strengthen the SDP’s reform agenda and foster sustainable development in Cross River State.
