17 ADC reps follow Obi, Kwankwaso to NDC

The structural integrity of Nigeria’s minor political parties faced a significant test this week as 17 members of the House of Representatives, formerly of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, formally announced their defection to the Nigeria Democratic Congress NDC, on Tuesday.

Political observers described the move, which follows the recent high-profile entry of Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso into the NDC ranks, as a “strategic consolidation.”

The defecting lawmakers, representing diverse federal constituencies across the federation, cited the need for a “unified and credible alternative” to the current governance model as the primary catalyst for their departure.

In a joint statement delivered on the floor of the green chamber at plenary on Tuesday, the group emphasized that their allegiance was shifting toward a platform that “prioritizes competence over traditional partisan entrenchment.”

A spokesperson for the Group of 17 said, “The entry of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso into the NDC has created a new center of gravity in Nigerian politics.

“For those of us dedicated to the principles of fiscal discipline and grassroots mobilization, the NDC now represents the most viable vehicle for national renewal.”

This defection signals a deepening of the 2026 political realignment,as TV the defection of 17 sitting lawmakers to the NDC provides it immediate legislative weight and an expanded national footprint ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party leadership, led by the former governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Seriake Dickson, welcomed the lawmakers, framing the event as a “patriotic merger of visions.”

But, the ‘statesmen’ within the hallowed halls of power are watching the fallout with measured concern, as the mass exodus leaves the ADC significantly diminished in the National Assembly, raising questions about the future of multi-party pluralism in Nigeria.

This is just as traditional power brokers within the APC and PDP are also reportedly recalibrating their strategies as the ‘OK Movement’ – the alliance of Obi and Kwankwaso – begins to diminish established legislative strength.

As the May 6 deadline for the submission of party registers approaches, the NDC seems to be transforming from a fledgling coalition into a formidable political force.

However, the questions begging for answer for the Nigerian electorate is whether this surge of “legislative migration” will translate into a cohesive governance plan or if it is merely a tactical gathering of suitor-politicians, seeking shelter before the coming storm.
