The Cross River State Carnival Commission has introduced online registration and voting for the Carnival Calabar 2026, in a major digital shift, aimed at giving spectators a more active role in the festival.
The chairman of the commission, Gab Onah, disclosed this on Sunday in Calabar during the flag-off of the first dry run for the 2026 edition.
The flag off was performed by the governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, represented by his deputy, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey.
Describing digitisation as a major strategy to reposition the carnival for bigger gains, Noah said, “Under the initiative, members of the public will be able to register as band members and participate in voting for the Band of the Year.”
He explained that the digital platform would broaden participation beyond the carnival route, allowing fans at home and abroad to follow the bands, engage with the competition and help decide the winner.

He said that the innovation would also make the process more transparent and inclusive, as votes from the public would now count in determining the best performing band of the year.
Onah stated that the move aligns with the vision of Governor Otu to reposition Carnival Calabar, “not merely as an annual celebration, but as a stronger economic asset capable of attracting visitors, supporting businesses and showcasing the state’s cultural heritage to national and international audiences.”
The commission chairman averred that the 2026 edition, anchored on the theme ‘Rethinking Our Collective Destiny,’ is a call for unity, equality and renewed commitment to the shared humanity of all people, while also serving as a platform for young people to showcase their creativity and talent.
Onah added that Nigerian music star, Davido had indicated his readiness to participate in this year’s festivities, while discussions with some international participants were still ongoing, as the commission works to surpass the ₦19 billion socio-economic impact recorded last year.
